DUI(driving under the influence)しない、などの模範行動を徹底することがだいじと肝に銘じました。

Nicolinakillerlegs

I experienced shock, pain, anger, kindness and hope all in 15 minutes last night.

It was almost 1am in the morning on Sunday (so, technically Saturday night) I was biking uptown from the Williamsburg Bridge and a young couple rushed out jaywalking as I was crossing the intersection. I hit one of them and got thrown on the street.

Unfortunately I was wearing short shorts with bare legs, but fortunately I was wearing a helmet and there was no car passing by at the moment so all the injuries I got were bruises and scratches on both of my legs.

The woman of the couple seemed upset and told me that this was where cars are supposed to run (we were on one of those streets that have no bike lanes). On the other hand, the man looked so pale and apologized. A few seconds later, the woman was still yelling at me about how this whole thing was my fault. She could have been just drunk but we almost got into a fight. The man was trying to calm her down and apologized to me again cautiously and then they walked away while I was still down on the ground.

A gentleman, a stranger, witnessed this and came all the way to help me up. He asked me if I was ok (the couple never did) and I answered yes. And then we saw 2 police officers on duty nearby, and this gentleman went up to explain how nasty and rude the woman was. After making sure the officers agreed to take care of everything, he politely shook hands with me and left. The officers told me that if the couple didn’t make me fall on purpose, which I don’t think they did, they could have charged those two people for jaywalking and harassment but only if that had happened before their eyes. They asked me if I needed the ambulance and sincerely apologized that that was all they could lawfully do. I didn’t think my injuries were that bad, so I thanked them and left home.

Though my legs still hurt every step I walk, and it was just very scary to fall on the middle of a street, and what the woman did was very dismissive, that gentleman and the police officers stopped me from losing faith in people. Their sympathy and kindness meant a lot to me.

Now that the city bike is so popular, I hope NYC constructs more and more bike lanes on the avenues and the streets. I hope it becomes safer to share the city for car drivers, bikers and pedestrians. I just registered as a member of Transportation Alternatives! Yay!

※By the way, the picture has nothing to do with the accident. I just wanted to show off her killer legs.
